You can run Software Update using a policy to upgrade to a minor macOS release. This method will upgrade your computer to the latest point release of that particular major macOS release. For example, a computer with macOS 10.14.1 will upgrade to 10.14.3 if it is the latest minor macOS release. When used with a software update server, this process provides more control over which update is installed. When you run Software Update using a policy on computers, you can choose whether updates are installed from Appleā€™s Software Update server or an internal software update server. To have computers install updates from an internal software update server, the software update server must be in Jamf Pro. For more information, see Software Update Servers in the Jamf Pro Administrator's Guide.

The JDS Installer for Mac (.pkg) and the JDS Installer for Linux (.run) allow you to install JDS instances on Mac or supported Linux operating systems. A JDS instance is a distribution point that is managed by the JSS, similar to a computer or mobile device. For more information on JDS instances, see JAMF Distribution Server Instances. Go to the Restricted Software section and click New. Depending on your OS you can enter the following: In the 'Process Name' field, enter e.g. 'Install macOS Big Sur.app' or 'Install macOS Catalina.app' Check the 'kill process' box. Add a message to display to the end user if they try to launch the macOS installer.

Note: Using a cache server can decrease the upgrade time.
