Barrage released for OS X

Derek S. Arndt has released a Mac OS X conversion of the Linux game Barrage. It’s a simple, 2D shooting gallery-style game that mixes elements of the Mac classic Airborne with Beachhead 2000 — on a field rife with columns of enemy soldiers, tanks and jeeps, you have to fire your artillery shells to hit them, timing your strikes just right and remembering to reload your ammo. Good, simple (albeit bloody) fun.

CryptoQuote 1.0 released

John Haney has released CryptoQuote for Mac OS X. It’s a word puzzle game containing hundreds of quotes. Tools are included to help you work the quotes out, and in addition to the hundreds of quotes included, you can also grab the puzzle of the day from Cryptoquote.com.

Epsilon Tahari: Reign of the Machines announced

DeepTrouble developer CodeBlender Software has announced their sophomore Mac game effort — Epsilon Tahari: Reign of the Machines. This game puts you in the cockpit of a flying vehicle as you assault Epsilon Tahari and try to steal technology from an alien race. The game is in beta and is expected to be available soon.

Europa Universalis II updated

Virtual Programming Ltd. has released an update to Europa Universalis II, the recently released strategic conquest game set during the Age of Exploration. The 1.0.1 patch, available for download from Macgamefiles.com, fixes a serious problem that prevented users from reloading saved games.

GameRanger supports NASCAR 2003

GameRanger, the online gamefinding service for Mac, announced support for Aspyr Media’s new ultra-realistic auto racing game, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season. With NASCAR and GameRanger, players can find other Mac gamers willing to compete online.

Green Dragon offers sale

Green Dragon Creations has taken the wraps off its Look What The Sun Did To Our Brains sale. Gridz is $15 (download for $10), Battle Girl is $10, Riot!, a “real” card game, is $10, and Last Contact costs $10 for three reg codes.

Master of Orion III beta patch available

Quicksilver Software, developers of Master of Orion III, have posted a beta patch for both Mac OS and Windows on their Web site. The beta patch sports improved enemy AI behavior and better user interface elements for navigation, as well as several other important changes.

Pop Until You Drop debuts

GameHouse has released a new pair of games for Mac and Windows called Pop Until You Drop and Super Pop Until You Drop. One’s playable online for free; the other’s downloadable and requires registration. The game resembles the classic Mac title Snood, or the arcade game Bust a Move: You fire colored balls at a field of similarly colored balls, matching color to color to make them vanish.

QuakeCon returns this August

August 14-17, 2003 brings the return of QuakeCon, that gathering of all Id Software otaku, to Texas. This year’s event happens at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Dallas. More than 4,000 participants are expected to compete for $125,000 in cash. Registration kicks off at 9AM ET on Monday, June 9, 2003 and it’s free — it’s first come, first served, though.

MacCentral brought readers an update from Freeverse on the status of three of its projects: 3D Bridge Deluxe, Solace and Active Lancer. Aspyr Media released the free NASCAR Racing 2003 Season Track Pack, an 18MB add-on for their new NASCAR Racing 2003 Season game. Blizzard Entertainment posted an update to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos that makes extensive balance changes to the game; visit Battle.net to download the 1.06 patch. Pangea Software is shipping its falling-fluids puzzle game Enigmo on CD-ROM. Aspyr Media said that SimCity 4 has reached its Final Candidate development milestone, and updated the status of other projects too. GarageGames plans to offer another new game to Mac and Linux gamers soon, called Tennis Critters.
